\brief{Otto Neurath an die Redaktionskomitees, 5. April 1940}{April 1940} \anrede{1940 Nr.~1} \anrede{To the Editors of the JOURNAL OF UNIFIED SCIENCE} \anrede{Carnap, Frank, J\o{}rgensen, Morris, Neurath, Reichenbach, Rougier, Stebbing} \haupttext{The transformation of ERKENNTNIS into THE JOURNAL OF UNIFIED SCIENCE is completed. The last two issues, 5/6 of Volume VIII, will appear in a few days. In the new Volume IX the papers of the HARVARD-Congress will be printed with additions which will be collected. I suggest that we collect articles of about 16 to 24 pages for the JOURNAL from scholars active in different sciences. Since the papers of the Congress will occupy much space, it will be sufficient if new articles come in after a few weeks. The number of books to be reviewed is increasing, but it will need a certain time to organize the business of reviews. In future less articles will appear in German. Freundlich's article for instance, is written in German, because he read this paper in German during his Dutch trip. According to a suggestion made by Charles Morris, I put the following proposal before you: An ADVISORY BOARD will be added to our EDITORIAL BOARD, composed of scientists who really help us by reading and examining manuscripts. Morris -- and myself too -- maintained that we should not name people ``honoris causa''. As a matter of fact, we are asking HEMPEL, NAGEL, and N\AE SS for their judgements, and we could start with these three as members of the Advisory Board. The names of the members of the ADVISORY BOARD will be printed inside the cover above the addresses of the members of the EDITORIAL BOARD. If no objections will reach me, I assume that this proposal has been accepted. The war made some trouble during the first months. The publisher and the transport agents had to learn how to dispatch the issues to the University of Chicago Press (many regulations have been changed). Many of our collaborators and reviewers have changed their domicile, but most of them are settled now. The correspondence with the U.S. has been hampered. The new air line Amsterdam-Lisbon-U.S. will improve the contacts. The publisher is very convenient; he is interested in the pulication of the Journal and prepared to improve printing and arrangement in all details. So far as I can see, some libraries who have subscribed to the ERKENNTNIS are now subscribing THE JOURNAL OF UNIFIED SCIENCE. I suggest that the editors promote our journal wherever an opportunity appears. The publisher sent a copy of each number to the editors. I hope that the numbers VIII, 1--4 are in your hands. } \grussformel{Otto Neurath} \ebericht{Brief, Dsl., 1 Seite, USMR 2-14; Briefkopf: \original{April 5, 1940}, Briefende: msl. \original{Morris}; Signatur msl.}
