Dear Sir!
Since the subscriptions to the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science are adequate we must prepare the manuscripts for the printer within the following 14 months. We are very glad that you are writing the pamphlet entitled: Mathematics and Logic. Please send us (if possible four typewritten copies) on 4 pages (about 1200 words in all) an abstract of your pamphlet – not merely an outline so that collaborators of our encyclopedia may be put in a position to adapt their particular pamphlet to pamphlets which deal with similar themes. We shall need your complete manuscript about the middle of March 1938 and your outline about the middle of February. Owing to the high cost of the preparatory work for the Encyclopedia it will not be possible to pay a honorarium to the authors for the first edition but we hope to be able to make a further statement about the subsequent editions in the near future.
We shall need a manuscript written by you of about 24.000 words.
The first 20 pamphlets are introductions only and we hope that you will not need too many footnotes.
The monographs should be intelligible to persons of a scientific habit of mind who are interested in the whole range of science, but without necessitating special preparations in a particular field, especially where a lack of knowledge of differential calculus is concerned.
If complicated explanations are necessary we suggest you use an appendix, for instance for mathematical formulas.
I hope to receive your abstract in the near future‚
Sincerely yours‚
Otto Neurath
