the best is I write you both only one letter, but in two copies. At first: many thanks for your kindness and friendship in Chicago – and before! The days in Chicago were very stimulating for me and I hope we will be able to continue the different contacts. I must speak Dec. 29 in Chicago and I could stay a few days longer if it would be useful for cooperation.
In NEW YORK was a great many work to do – that is very nice, because I am not enough used in The Hague. I hope we will find together a good proposal for the University of Chicago Press.
I myself would prefer: Unified Science. but if “Unity of Science” is better for propaganda I could concede it. You see, Unity of Science is an old name – you find a long list of books, articles in which you can read this term, also as title of books, But “Unified Science” means more and would be a new term. But I understand that new terms are also dangerous…
Would be possible the formulation: INTERNATIONAL UNITY OF SCIENCE ENCYCLOPAEDIA? That seems me better than International Encycl[opaedia] of Unity of Science, because in the second case would be the abbreviation: International Encyclopaedia only…But that is not so important. We must only think about.
By reading the Paris Report the two leaders of the Press know that we have a Special Committee: CARNAP, FRANK, JØRGENSEN, MORRIS, NEURATH, ROUGIER.
I think it is not necessary to speak in this moment about the sub-committees. You can mention it.
Between brackets: Waldemar Kaempffert wishes to print Franks article in The New York Times with a special introduction.1Eine entsprechende Publikation konnte nicht eruiert werden. Please send me quickly the fascicles of Hermann with Franks Publication (Introduction of BOLL about Frank!) and the congress fascicles (I shall send you both back in near future) with Franks lectures. 1. Generell 2. Encyclopaedia 3. Philosophy in USSR. Kaempffert is very interested in, specially also in the lecture about Russia. Please send me what to say about Frank. I give Kaempffert a longer information. Article in the science column with introduction of Kaempffert would be useful for Frank, I think so. Have you connections with people in the position to give a short characteristic of Franks specific work within physics? Please send me such characteristics if you can get. It is very difficult for me to find the bibliography of Franks work. A few books and articles of Frank are in the public library, but not a list of the physical publications. But the cause that I mention Kaempffert is this: he would be prepared to work with us, for instance in a redaction committee, if we wish it. What is your opinion about it? He is very interested in our work, he knows a great many scientists and is reading a great many things always, writing about modern sciences etc. If you both agree with me I would invite him at first informally to help us in the redaction work.
20 Names.
I think it would be the best to give for a group of pamphlets the titles and the authors and also titles without authors and authors without titles that we are not binded at first. My suggestion would be:
TITLE of two volumes: FOUNDATIONS OF UNITY OF SCIENCE.
- Introductions. Different articles of different authors, perhaps it would be possible to bring an article of Bertrand Russell. About “Bridges”, “Unification of Language and Terms”, “Verba Prohibita” (if it is allowed)…Would be possible a title like: ENCYLOPAEDIA AND ENCYCLOPAEDISM?
- Logical Analysis of Science CARNAP
- Signs, Words, …Semiotic and so on MORRIS
- Languages (if we find an author for this subject matter)
- Calculus, Order, Numbers…(mathematics more or less). The field of Hahn: Perhaps GOEDEL? Or more than one author? Arne Næss, Hempel, Tarski …Ajdukiewicz …Maybe this pamphlet would be more interesting if we could bring more than one author. Or more than one pamphlet? 🕮aKsl. am Seitenanfang Methode der empirischen Wissenschaft („Theorie der Erfahrung“) Mises? Hempel?.
- Theory of PhysicsbKsl. Mehr als ein Heft!. (perhaps an addition of NIELS BOHR). FRANK
- Cosmic Physics (Cosmology?) Very important. REICHENBACHcKsl. Vielleicht nicht nötig?.
- Behavior TOLMAN
perhaps additions of a few pages of Brunswik, Arne Næss and so on, Hollitscher.
- Society (better than social sciences, because we have also animal societies, but we cannot say: animal social sciences…). I would prefer titles which are giving the subject-matter self! Behavior, Society, Symbols, Numbers, Order, and so on, if possible. NEURATH
Tinbergen would be prepared to give a special addition about modern business cycles theory etc. He is a specialist inaon this field and feels for our problematic.
- Statistics applied to social sciences and other sciences, only if we could find a man for application of statistics, for instance MISESdKsl. Wahrscheinlichkeit:Reichenbach. (ISTAMBUL). FRANK would speak with him about this cooperation. I think it would be better not to speak about this subject matter before we do not know if Mises is prepared to work out this very important concrete book. For special problems Lazarsfeld? Or?
- History of knowledge (including sciences, but we find a great many knowledge before the sciences!) BOLL, …ENRIQUES
I think it would be very interesting to bring special additions about peoples living in magicien periods and so on. We shall not concentrate our historical interest in the present period! Anthropology etc.
- History of General Ideas (that is a term instead of “Philosophy”, but also including magician ideas and so on). ROUGIER
With additions of Lévy-Bruhl etc. Thurnwald. In this time, I think, living in the U.S.
- History of Logic.eKsl. (Ist das nötig in den 2 Bänden?).ŁUKASIEWICZ
I wasfKsl. nicht nötig, teilweise in 12. in correspondence with H. Scholz about this. He has not time.
- History of Logical Empiricism. JØRGENSEN
With additions of representatives of different countries about the unity of science movement and logical empiricism in the different countries. I hope we will get articles of our friends in China, Japan etc. I received letters of such persons.
- Logical Problems of Biology. WOODGER
Additions of Haldane. He is very interested in our problems. I spoke with him in Kopenhagen.
- Biology and Physics. RASHEVSKY, LECOMTE DU NOÜY etc.
- Geology, Geography, etc.gKsl. nicht nötig.maybe, if we find good authors of our movement for this field. It could be interesting for a great many people to see in which way we can organize also such fields. Not necessary.
- Chemistry – is a part of physics, but with a great many special problems. Also a question of authors.
- Education. Would be perhaps interesting. Specially for American readers.hKsl. und hsl. Auch: Logic of Values. It would be possible to give a view of our movement and of educational purposes. I would very pleased to give an addition about VISUAL EDUCATION in connection with our problems, about the “Word-Civilisation” of the middle ages, within we are living. But that is only a footnote. But maybe you both feel for it. I have a great many impressions during my trip in this direction. But such a group of articles must be very well collected. I think it would be better to speak about it in the next step.
- Bibliography (maybe also biographical data). Notes. And INDEX for the first two volumes. That is a part of the General Index! It would be very stimulating if we could announce the unification suggestions of the logical symbolic and to bring a group of translation-examples (Trilingual-Dictionary). For instance of a group of main terms.
I would be very glad if my suggestions give you a help. I think you see more possibilities to use the help of American scientists. My order is not the order of the Encyclopaedia itself. That is a special problem. 🕮
I think it would be the best to bring the pamphlet about the Unity of Science movement as one of the first pamphlets…This and different problems are more detail questions.
What is your opinion? Could I as chief editor propose a redaction committee? I see, it would be necessary for instance to find a way to the far East and to Russia, also to India. To Russia it would be possible to find a way by means of Frank. But for far East we must find a man which is a friend of our movement, but not necessarily a “member” and not a “writer” of a pamphlet. Kaempffert for instance emphasized, that he is willing to help in a redaction of our work, but that to cooperate as a writer would not be a question. I think that for the complete encyclopaedia he would be also useful as a writer. He has a very interesting feeling for inventions in different periods and so on, but that is another question. If we build up a redaction committee, I think it would be useful to find men in different coutries. And by means of these men, we would be able to find collaborators in India (a friend of mine is Professor in India in this time), Far East, USSR…I think it would be interesting for many readers to find also these commodities in our store. That is for the future!
It would [be] very fine to build up these two volumes in the next three years and to show to our international congress atbon the Harvard University.
I hope to get from you both suggestions, additions, corrections, changes etc. I think it is necessary to invite more Americans, but the logical empiricism is the most important point. I see, we have a great many friends in this country and I hope we will find good collaborators. Psychologists, Sociologists and so on.
Thanks for letter of Morris, with the names. I was in Buffalo and met the chief of the Visual Education Departement of the State New York. He was listener of my lecture and we were going by train from Buffalo to Albany, time enough to speak about the whole world and a few other things.
Greetings. Remember me, please, to cthe both wives (“better romantic on table than in brain”! and: “all sports – if gratis”).
Good night…
