\haupttext{Let me congratulate you most heartily upon your invitation from Harvard\II{\harvard}. An honorary doctorate from there is a very
great honor indeed. I mentioned it to my colleagues here, and was glad to be able to do so since it gave an objective
confirmation of some of the things I had been saying about you to them.

As I told you, our president, Hutchins\IN{\hutchins}, does not think well of positivism, pragmatism, or any scientific philosophy.
Consequently, although my department proposed me for chairman (since the present chairman retires this year), the
president\IN{\hutchins} will have none of me. It has been my hope that we might bring you here, and even now I will continue to do
whatever is possible. But how much will be possible is not clear. An Englishmen is being considered by the president as
chairman, and I have talked at length with this person about you and have written Lewis\IN{\lewis} to do the same. It is not yet
sure that this Mr. X\IN{} will accept, nor that if he does he would be sympathetic to your kind of work. As to the acceptance,
that we will know in another month, and I will keep you informed as to developments. If events move in a way that makes
it impossible to bring you here, I will do whatever I can with other Universities in your behalf. In fact I have already
written Lewis\IN{\lewis} about you, expressing the hope that if we cannot get you, that Harvard\II{\harvard} will be able to. I will also write
to Princeton\II{\princeton}, Columbia\II{\columbiauniversity}, California\II{} etc when it seems wise. I have close friends in many of these places.

I am delighted to know that you will make a trip to this country next year. It seems to me that it should be
possible without any doubt to organize some kind of lecture tour at that time, i.\,e. one large enough to at least pay your
expenses and train fare to a number of our larger cities and institutions. By all means write to the International
Institute of Education\II{\iie} about this. I will also write to a number of institutions about your visit, and will do whatever
is possible to be of help.

Thanks for the \uline{Philosophy and Logical Syntax}\IC{\londonervortraege} volume -- it will be useful to English readers. I was sorry to read the
news of the death of Rougier's wife\IN{\rougierfrau}. It revived memories of poor Mrs Dubislav\IN{\dubislavfrau}. Tell your own wife\IN{\ina} to be careful and not
to do more than break a thumb! It will be nice to see both of you again in Paris!}
