Dear Professor Carnap –
Your letter which came today is difficult to answer, since I would not wish in any way to hinder your plans – and I could not be sure from the letter whether you were anxious to go to the Dolomites or were doing it for us.
Much as I regret to say so, I do not believe that it would be wise for us to go –but I see no reason whatever why that should keep you from going. We shall be in that region in late September, and the fact that I have so much yet to do in Vienna makes me feel that I should stay here until about August 7th – that will still give us a month in Prag. So if you went to Italy for two weeks you would be back in Prag not long after we got there – for that reason I do not feel that my decision should necessarily hinder your Italian trip. If on other grounds you do not make that trip it would still be possible for us to go somewhere in Czechoslovakia for
And so it stands: make whatever plans best suit you, and in any case we will be together – whether in Prag or elsewhere – from at the latest August 10 until the end of the Congress
Many thanks for your new pamphlet
‘Deduction’ is not perhaps here strict – but I believe that the ethical theories of pragmatism are in a somewhat close relation to the theory of meaning, – certainly as close as Einheitswissenschaft & physikalismus stand to the ‘Vienna’ criterion of the meaningful. Neurath
Cordially
