Your notesB1934@„Rezension von Lewis, C.I., and C.H. Langford, Symbolic Logic“, Erkenntnis 4, 1934, 65–66 to the LewisPLewis, Clarence Irving, 1883–1964, am. Philosoph articleB interested me very much – especially your recognition of the shift in logical positivism, a shift which seems to me to be in the direction of pragmatism and which has important consequences which perhaps your group – and LewisPLewis, Clarence Irving, 1883–1964, am. Philosoph himself – has not fully seen. Of this we can talk later. I am sending you a copy of an article Pragmatism and MetaphysicsBMorris, Charles W.!1934@„Pragmatism and Metaphysics“, Philosophical Review 43, 1934, 549-564 which will appear sometime this year in the Philosophical ReviewI. It is possible that your answer to LewisPLewis, Clarence Irving, 1883–1964, am. Philosoph might also include some reference to my articleBMorris, Charles W.!1934@„Pragmatism and Metaphysics“, Philosophical Review 43, 1934, 549-564. Though this was written before Lewis’PLewis, Clarence Irving, 1883–1964, am. Philosoph articleB it seems to me logically to continue in a positive fashion some of the criticism he raises. At least it represents some of my problems now and will furnish a basis discussion. My book on mindB may be useful as showing the movement of philosophy in America – it is however mainly the historical introduction to a series of three volumes on mind, and does not present my views analytically or systematically. It contains therefore nothing definitive, though it does indicate the direction of my thought.
When we leave here on June 15th we begin a little trip through Germany – Leipzig, Weimar, München, etc – so it will not be possible to come to Prague on our way to Vienna. 🕮
I spent several days with FeiglPFeigl, Herbert, 1902–1988, öst.-am. Philosoph, seit 1931 verh. mit Maria Feigl before I left, so I have a fairly good idea of the Viennese situation. My main task at present is to read widely. In Vienna I shall simply meet what men I can, discussing with them for the most part questions of symbolism (meaning etc) and empiricism. I will seek SchlickPSchlick, Moritz, 1882–1936, dt.-öst. Philosoph, verh. mit Blanche Guy Schlick out first, and am sending him a copy of the pragmatism paper. I appreciate your hints, and will be grateful for any information you think I should have. Reading and discussion are my main goals – and the discussion can be in German as well as English.
It is kind of you to think of us in connection with your outing in the mountains. But you must not disturb your own plans. My little girlPMorris, Sally, Tochter von Charles W. und Trude Morris is six years old. My wifePMorris, Trude, verh. mit Charles W. Morris is not able to stand very high altitudes. If however you go to the mountains near enough to Prag or to some place like Salzburg (where we have friends) my wife could go down to a lower level if it should prove necessary. We would of course be delighted to be with you. If you should take your outing the last week in July and the early week or weeks of August, let us know, and we will make our plans accordingly. Then if my wife finds the altitude too high either she alone or both of us can go down to a lower altitude. You might also mention the general type of clothes we will need, since we do not have at present many sport or outing clothes with us.
