Rudolf Carnap an C. K. Ogden, 29. Dezember 1933 Dezember 1933

Dear Mr. Ogden‚

the best and most pleasing things of all the things I got this Christ-birthday (Christmas) are the booksBB you sent me so kindly. It was very interesting for me to get knowledge of your system of Basic English. And here you see the fruit of my reading. At school I was learningdid much Latin and Greek but very little English. Later I was sometimes reading English books and papers ofin relation to my science range, but had no chance forof talking and writing. My knowledge of English is so bad, that I have not ever had the heart for writing an English letter. And now I am very happy to be able to do so bywith the help of Basic English. Certainly there is still a great number of errors in my letter, but I have the hope forof learning better. May I get your kind help forin this? If it is not much trouble for you, please will you send me back the second copy of this letter with the chief errors marked? I am in full agreement with your (and Miss LockhartsPLockhart, Miss) statement about word economy. I have the belief: that if there would bewas a competition to see which among the philosophical books and papers in German for themade use of the least number of words, I might possibly would be at the top.

Please will you kindly give the letter put in heresent with this to Messrs. Kegan PaulIKegan Paul, Verlag, with your approval about the way of payment. 🕮

Dr.Mr. BlackPBlack, Max, 1909–1988, brit.-am. Philosoph said in his letter of November 19th, that the complete paper has to be in the hands of Kegan PaulIKegan Paul, Verlag by Dec. 31st. I sent him a letter about the agreement with you at the Dec. 7th and a card at the 23rd. But till now I did not getso far I have not had anything from him. I have the hope, that we may make a step overhave a little longer than the fixed time.

With my best hopes for you and your work in the startingcoming New Year‚

yours very truly
R.C.

30th Dec.

Now I get your new parcel: your book “The Meaning of Meaning”B, and RichardsPRichards, Ivor Armstrong, 1893–1979, brit. Literaturkritiker “Basic Rules of Reason”B. I had the strong desire for thewas looking forward to reading of your bookB, and now I am very pleased to get it. From the marked point (p. 222) I see that our views about metaphysics will be in good agreement. With great interest I will see the details of your views. I would saygive you “heartliest thanks”, but I do not see any way in Basic English to say it.aHsl. mit Pfeil “It was very kind of you to send”.

At the same time I get a letter from Mr. BlackPBlack, Max, 1909–1988, brit.-am. Philosoph; he will send me the paper soonin a short time.
